Ford Transit Oil Pump and Low Oil Pressure Problems
Low engine oil pressure can rapidly damage bearings, crankshafts and other lubricated components. An oil-pressure warning should be treated as urgent, even if the engine appears to run normally.
Possible causes include low oil level, a faulty pressure sensor, blocked oil pick-up, contamination, worn bearings, pump faults or other lubrication-system problems. A warning light alone does not prove the oil pump has failed.
What should you do?
Stop safely and turn the engine off if an oil-pressure warning appears. Check the owner's manual and arrange appropriate diagnosis rather than continuing to drive.
How is the fault diagnosed?
A technician may verify oil pressure with suitable equipment, inspect the oil and filter, check the lubrication system and investigate mechanical noise. Diagnosis depends on the engine.
When is engine replacement needed?
If oil starvation has damaged the crankshaft, bearings or other internal parts, rebuilding or replacing the engine may be necessary. Transit Tech can discuss reconditioned engines with new oil pumps, main bearings and big-end bearings as part of the specified rebuild.
